Virchow's triad

Virchow's triad refers to three factors that Rudolf Virchow suggested predisposed a patient to developing venous thrombosis

  1. local trauma to the vessel wall
  2. stasis (of blood flow)
  3. hypercoagulability (of the blood)

Stated another way, they are:

ii) trouble with the flow
iii) trouble with the blood itself.
