Virgil Finlay

Virgil Finlay

Virgil Finlay (1914-1971) was a pulp fantasy, science fiction and horror illustrator. He first published drawings in Weird Tales in 1935, where his realistic style, his use of scratchboard and of stippling made him an immediate hit. In 1938 he went to work for the staff of The American Spectator under A. Merritt. After service in World War II he did a considerable amount of work for science fiction and astrology magazines as they evolved from pulps to digests. He died just before Donald M. Grant published the first collection of his artwork.
