Vonage

Vonage

Vonage is a commercial voice over IP network that provides telephone service via a broadband connection. In order to use the service, customers must have a VoIP router that plugs into their main router or broadband modem. It also requires around 19 kbit/s upload speed to make calls without substantial lag.

Based in Edison, New Jersey, Vonage offers services to subscribers throughout the United States. It expanded into Canada in April 2004, and into the United Kingdom at the beginning of 2005.

Vonage offers unlimited calling to the US and Canada for a flat monthly fee, with other calls to the US and Canada being charged at the same domestic rate. Similarly, in the UK, calls to Ireland are included in the monthly fee.

Vonage has an online community called the Vonage VoIP Forum which is provided as a free service to current subscribers and potential new customers.

Number portability

Subscribers are able to choose any US or Canadian area code available, regardless of where they live in those countries. They also have the option of having 'virtual numbers' for a monthly fee. For example, somebody in Florida may choose to have a number with the Manhattan area code 212, meaning that anyone in New York who calls them is only billed for a local call, and vice versa. Alternatively, a Vonage subscriber in Canada can have a 'virtual number' with a US area code, so that anyone who calls that number from the US, is only billed for a call within the US. In addition, Vonage now offers 'virtual numbers' in Mexico.

Although only residents of the US, Canada, and the UK may subscribe to Vonage, there are many people around the world who use their accounts with local broadband connections without difficulty. For instance, someone who has a relative in Australia may order the Vonage package for that relative, and it would work without difficulty.
