WBMA-LP

WBMA-LP, channel 58, known on-air as Alabama's ABC 33/40, is the ABC affiliate for Birmingham/Anniston/Tuscaloosa television market. The station began operation on September 6, 1996, shortly after longtime ABC affiliate WBRC became a Fox owned and operated affiliate. The station's call letters stands for W AlaB aM A.

The "33/40" comes from its two full-power satelites, WCFT Tuscaloosa and WJSU Anniston. WBMA's signal doesn't make it too far outside of Birmingham, but WCFT and WJSU's combined signals bring ABC to all of Central Alabama.

WBMA and WCFT are owned by TV Alabama, Incorporated, which is a subsidary of Allbritton Communications and operates WJSU through a local marketing agreement.

The station's current slogan is "Alabama's News Leader".

History

The station debuted on September 1, 1996, their first slogan was "We're Building Our Station Around You". This was quite accurate because the programming consultants of ABC 33/40 surveyed numerous of people across Central Alabama about what they wanted in a station. They also literally built a new station in Birmingham from that information they gathered. Since then they have changed their slogan to "Where News Comes First" back to the original slogan of "We're Building Our Station Around You" to now "Alabama's News Leader".
