Weekly Dig
The Weekly Dig (along with The Boston Phoenix) is one of the two popular weekly rags or alternative weeklies found in Boston, Massachusetts. It is typical to find edgy articles, local bar, entertainment and club listings, as well as personal and classifieds. It can be picked up free of charge in any of the numerous bright orange, self-serve newspaper dispensers located all throughout the city. Boston’s Weekly Dig is the region’s fastest-growing alternative/entertainment weekly newspaper. The dig was originally launched in September of 1999 by publisher, Jeff Lawrence. In January of 2005, the dig went through a tremendous relaunch that offered a new, sexier design and more of the unique edgy content that dig readers have come to expect. Lawrence and his staff of more than 20 editors, designers and advertising representatives put out a fresh and exciting paper every Wednesday that offers their unfettered observations on music, arts, politics, technology, film, sex, food, drink and everything else. The dig offers a tone that is candid, sharp, funny, conversational and informative. That’s the dig in a nutshell: breaking some trends, and bucking others. In October, 2004, Boston magazine publisher Metrocorp announced that it bought a majority stake in Weekly Dig. Metrocorp, which has operated Boston magazine since 1971, also publishes Elegant Wedding, Concierge, Home & Garden and New England Travel and Life. It also has operated Philadelphia magazine since 1946.
