Wessex Hall Wessex Hall is one of the thirteen Halls of Residences at the University_of_Reading , UK. The Hall currently occupies a site off Whiteknights Road in Reading and has 215 Rooms, with two postgraduate flats. All rooms are fully catered although this is currently being reviewed by the University with 19 meals a week provided (no Saturday or Sunday Evening meal). The Hall has a range of facilities including a Bar, Library, Computer Room, JCR/T.V. Room, Function Room as well as sharing Squash_(sport) and Tennis Courts with Bridges_Hall. HistoryWessex Hall was founded in 1913 as the third Hall for women at University College Reading (the University was then part of Oxford). The Hall was made up of a series of houses and other buildings set amongst beautiful lawns and gardens in Redlands Road. In 1965 the Hall moved to its present location beside the lake at Whiteknights. The Royal Berkshire Hospital now occupies the original site. In June 1920 the Warden and students adopted the White Horse of Wessex as their badge. A free translation of the Anglo-Saxon motto on the badge is: "Others have prevailed. So may I" In October 1977 Wessex ceased to be a women only Hall and became mixed. The Junior Common RoomThe Junior Common Room (or JCR) for Wessex Hall, known as Wessex JCR was founded in 1920 and has been active since. The main roles of the JCR is represent the views of it's members, provide extra facilities and organise social events. The JCR typically organise four major formals per year and at least one small event each week of term such as a Quiz Night. The JCR has around 300 members in total with a significant number of ex-members of the Hall (known as Attached Members) as well as the residents of the Randolph-Macon_College Houses, who are visting Students from the United_States. The JCR consists of a President, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President, two Social Representatives, two Welfare Representatives, an Attached Members Representative, First Year's Representative, Hall Representative and an International Students Representative. These positions are elected posts and the Hall appoints three further representatives itself. The JCR is run under a constitution which it is required to abide by.
