Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck
Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck is an updated version of the American television game show Press Your Luck that has aired on GSN since April 15, 2002. Todd Newton hosts the show, with Gary Kroeger announcing. Gameplay remains the same, and the evil Whammy takes away the winnings of any contestant who lands on it. However, there are some differences between the two shows: - In the first round, Whammy! does not include a question round, as was the case in Press Your Luck. Instead, contestants start at the game board, alternating with a chance to spin at the board. Each contestant is given $1,000 to start the show.
- If the player doesn't wish to spin, he/she may "freeze" his/her winnings, which means that the contestant won't have to worry about hitting the dreaded Whammy.
- As in the old show, four Whammies are featured on the board, but after each set of spins, four more Whammies are added. In addition, if a player hits a Whammy in the first round, he/she is eliminated from the round.
- Round two is played exactly like the original show, with a series of questions being asked at the beginning of the round. Five questions are being asked in this round, and the maximum number of spins a contestant may earn is 15.
- Round three is dubbed the Big Board Round. In addition to the original Whammies, a new character has been added to the board. The Double Whammy is the same as a regular Whammy, but with a messier scheme. Contestants may pass their spins to the player next to them if they so desire, as in the original series.
- Unlike the original series, champions do not get to return for a second show. However, if two or more contestants end the show with $0 and less than four Whammies, they may participate again in a new show.
- Instead of the cartoon drawings on the old show, the Whammies are rendered in 3-D effects.
A new feature called the "Big Bank" was added for the show's second season in 2003. The "Big Bank" always begins with $3,000, and the money that contestants lose after a Whammy is hit is accumulated into the bank. If a player hits the "Big Bank" square, the host asks a difficult general-knowledge trivia question to the contestant, who gains the money in the bank if the question is answered correctly.
