Wies

The pilgrimage church of Wies (Wieskirche) is one of the most beautiful rococo churches in the world. It was built in the late 1740s by the famous Domenikus Zimmermann. It is located in the Steingaden municipality in the
Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany.

In 1738 tears were seen on figure of the Scourged Saviour. This miracle quickly resulted in a pilgrimage to see the figure. In 1740 a small chapel was built to house the figure, but it was soon realized it was too small for the number of pilgrimates it attracts, and thus the Steingaden monastery decided to build a church. Construction took from 1745-54. During the secularization in the beginning of the 19th century the church was about to be sold and demolished, however due to the initiative of local farmers it was saved. In 1983 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, 1985-91 it did undergo massive reconstruction.
