Wombourne
- Sometimes spelled without the 'e' as Wombourn.
Wombourne is a large village - officially, the largest village in England - located in South Staffordshire. It is governed by a parish council and comes under the authority of South Staffordshire District Council. The village, as it stands today, was formed many years ago by merging with the hamlet of Orton and the small village of Ounsdale. The village is located four miles to the south-west of Wolverhampton, where many residents work. However, the village also has its own industrial estate. There are a number of small shops, restaurants and no less than six pubs. Children have a choice of four primary schools to attend and there is one large comprehenive school, [Ounsdale High School]. A canal runs north-to-south through the west side of the village and Bratch Locks are located to the north. There is a village green, which regularly plays host to cricket matches.
Wombourne Today Wombourne has become a popular place to live and many new houses have been built in recent years. The most notable new developments are on the Pool House estate. You can't mistake the number of youngsters in the village centre (outside the chip shop) on a Friday night, getting drunk. Look out for the chavs!
