Women Airforce Service Pilot Badge
The Women Airforce Service Pilot Badge is a decoration of the United States Army which was issued during the years of the Second World War. The decoration was created by order of the Army Air Force and was intended to recognize those members of the Women Auxiliary Service Pilots (WASPs) who were qualified for aerial command duties to include the position of pilot, navigator, and aircrew member. The first Women Airforce Service Pilot Badges were issued by individual commands and therefore varied in appearance depending on the awarding authority. By 1943, a standard design had been approved for all WASP awardees throughout the Army Air Force. The new badge consisted of the standard Pilot Badge, with a diamond centered between two silver wings. In 1947, with the creation of the United States Air Force, the Women Airforce Service Pilot Badge fell into disuse and none were issued after 1950. By the 1960s, with women integrated into the United States military with no further need of separate female corps, the Women Airforce Service Pilot Badge had been declared obsolete.
