Wood Buffalo (electoral district)

Wood Buffalo (electoral district)

Wood Buffalo is an Albertan provincial electoral district, located in the northeastern corner of the province.

The district was created in the Alberta electoral boundary re-distribution of 2004 to encompass the entire regional municipality of Wood Buffalo. Prior to 2004, the city of Fort McMurray was an electoral district in its own right and the rest of the municipality was part of Athabasca-Wabasca. With a recorded population of 42,971 that is more than 20% above the provincial average, the new district is the most populous in Alberta.

Its position in the northeast corner of Alberta places Wood Buffalo on the borders with province of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Clockwise from the Saskatchewan boundary, Wood Buffalo is also bordered by the electoral districts of Lac La Biche-St. Paul, Lesser Slave Lake and Peace River.

The current MLA for Fort McMurray, Progressive Conservative Guy Boutilier is seeking re-election in the new district in the 26th Alberta general election.
