WPSG-TV

WPSG-TV Channel 57 is the UPN Television affiliate in Philadelphia, PA, owned by Viacom, with transmitter in the Roxborough section of the city. Channel 57 first signed on the air in 1981 as WWSG, a station which aired FNN programming during the day and subscription TV at night. The station would only remain that way for four years, as in 1985, William Gross, the founder of the station, sold it to Milton Grant, who changed the call letters to WGBS and turned the station into an Independent.

The station also aired NBC shows that then-NBC affiliate KYW preempted in favor of their own local programming, thus serving as the alternate affiliate to NBC.

Grant had hoped to get his stations up on satellite and turn them into Superstations, however, he ended up in debt, and his creditors, Combined Broadcasting, took over his stations. Combined put the stations up for sale in 1994. Fox Broadcasting was looking into buying either WCAU Channel 10 or Channel 57, because Paramount had originally planned on bumping Fox's programming from their owned station, WTXF 29 in favor of the to-be launched UPN. Instead, Paramount sold 29 to Fox then purchased 57. WGBS became the UPN affiliate on January 16, 1995, the day the network launched. One year later, Viacom, who had purchased Paramount not long after UPN was launched, changed the call letters to WPSG, for "Paramount Stations Group." WPSG is the broadcast home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
