WSOC-TV
WSOC-TV, channel 9 is the ABC affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina, the United States' 28th largest television market. It is owned by Cox Enterprises of Atlanta. WSOC was Charlotte's second television station, signing on on April 29, 1957 as a primary NBC affiliate, with a secondary ABC affiliation. It was owned by the Jones family, who put WSOC-AM, Charlotte's second radio station, on the air in 1929. Cox bought the station in 1959. The station became solely NBC in 1964 after WCCB-TV signed on. However, it rejoined ABC in 1978 after ABC became the highest-rated network in the country for the first time ever and wanted a stronger outlet than WCCB. For many years, WSOC was a very distant second in the Charlotte market, undoubtedly because WBTV had a nine-year head start. Since 1990, WSOC has had the highest-rated newscast in the market, but tied with WBTV for overall viewership. Its call letters stand for We Serve Our Community. WSOC-TV also produces a 10:00 newscast on their sister station, WAXN-TV Action 64.
