Wu She Incident

Wu She Incident

The Wu She Incident was an uprising by members of the Atayal aboriginal tribe against Japanese rule in the area of Wu She in Central Taiwan in 1930. Led by the tribal leader Mona Rudao (or Mona Ludao), about 300 members of the Atayal attacked a school during an athletic meet on 27 October, killing 134 Japanese. The Japanese retaliated with more than 7000 men, machine guns, and even poison gas; by the time the rebellion had been suppressed it was estimated that around 644 out of 1200 natives in the rebelling tribes had been killed or had committed suicide.
