XMMS2

XMMS2 (Cross platform music multiplexing system) is a new generation of the XMMS audio player. It is a new design, written from scratch, separate from the XMMS codebase. There is currently no stable release of the code, but the team is making progress towards that end.

Since the project is constantly evolving, it would currently be easier to follow its progress on the XMMS2 Wiki. Especially note the Read me first! page.

Other projects

It should be noted that there is some amount of confusion about the relation between XMMS and XMMS2:

Another project named XMMS2, by Mohammed Sameer, is described as "a Gtk 2 port of the well known xmms." This is not related to the official XMMS2 project.
A better known GTK2 port of XMMS is the Beep Media Player, which is sometimes referred to (erroneously) as XMMS2. The BMP FAQ explains that project's relationship to XMMS.
