Yunalesca

Lady Yunalesca is a fictional character from Final Fantasy X. She was the first summoner to defeat Sin.

Yunalesca used her husband, Lord Zaon, as her Final Aeon. After that, as an unsent, she greets the summoners who make it to Zanarkand and explains that they must sacrifice one of their guardians to become the fayth for the Final Summoning.

For a millenium this tradition was not challenged, until a summoner named Yuna (who was, ironically, named after Yunalesca herself) and her guardians learned from her that the Final Summoning could never truly defeat Sin. After Yuna tells Yunalesca that she will not support this false tradition, despite Yunalesca's remonstrances that it will bring hope to the people of Spira, Yunalesca attacks the party in an attempt to, in her view, save them from the despair she believes will result from their "tossing away hope". Yunalesca was seemingly killed, with the Final Summoning existing no more. But in truth, Yunalesca ended up in the Via Infinito under Bevelle where the spirit of Zaon resided. Over the next two years, a now 'purposeless' Yunalesca became an giant baslisk-type Fiend & was finally put to rest by YRP while they traveled the Via Infinito.

Analysis

Yunalesca was somewhat of an enigma. Was she truly a villain? Or was she simply doing what she thought was best for Spira? Her father was Sin, and she knew this. Perhaps, torn between filial loyalty and the people of Spira, she simply aided in the continuation of a tradition that would stop the destruction for awhile, but permit her father to remain in power and also fame, in the religion of Yevon. There is really no way to know for sure. It is worth noting that several other characters in Final Fantasy 10 did wrong, yet thought that what they did was right for Spira. One of the most notable is Seymour Guado, who thought that the only way to "save" Spira was to destroy it.
