Zacharo

Zacharo (Greek: Ζαχάρω), also Zaharo or Zakharo is a community and a municipality located in the southwestern part of the prefecture of Ilia in the middle of a highway named GR-9/E55 linking Pyrgos and GR-9A along with Kyparissia. Distance from Athens is 280 km (old: 320 km SW), about 30 km SE of Pyrgos and about 9 km S of Krestena, 13 km SW of Olympia, and about 30 km north of Kyparissia and NW of Kalamata. It is one of the fastest growing towns in Ilia and the commune population will reach the 7,000 mark.

    Historical population:

The community has a school, a kindergarten school, a lyceum, a gymnasium, a church, a post office, a police station, banks and a (plateia) with a statue and a tree which runs near the main highway.

The village lies next to the Ionian Sea and has a beach about 500 m west of the centre and a train station linking the railway line of Pyrgos - Kyparissia - Allagi about 100 m west of the main highway of Pyrgos to Kyparissia and has some trees.

It also has a traffic light on the highway.

Residential houses are in the west and east.

The mountains are founded and surrounding almost Zacharo while narrow fertile lands dominate the south with a length of about 1 km. Pine forests are in the northwest while grasses and bush dominates the mountains elsewhere. Wetlands used to dominate the western part.

Kaiafa lake is founded to its northwest where its most beatuiful beaches and spas are founded.
