Zbigniew of Poland

Zbigniew of Poland

Zbigniew of Poland (born after 1070, died 1112). First-born son of Wladislaus I Herman (Władysław I Herman) and Przecława. In his youth he studied in Krakow, and later spent time at the women's convent in Quedlinburg.

He was brought to Poland despite opposition from Sieciech, and was designated by his father Ladislaus as heir to the throne. From 1102 he was duke of Poland. In 1107 he was chased from the country by his half-brother Boleslaus III the Wrymouth (Bolesław III Krzywousty), and then sought help from Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor, joining his campaign against Poland in 1109, ending in the Battle of Hundsfeld. He was commanded by his brother to return to Poland, where he was blinded, and later died in 1112.
