ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam

In the anime series Gundam Seed Destiny, the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam is ZAFT's newest and most advanced mobile suit. Equipped with a nuclear reactor, the Destiny Gundam is substantially more powerful than its predecessors. Its armament includes the standard beam rifle and head-mounted CIWS, an folded anti-ship sword mounted behind the right shoulder, a folded beam cannon behind the left shoulder, and a pair of shoulder-mounted beam boomerangs. In addition, it has some more unusual weaponry: palm-mounted beam cannons, a hand-mounted set of beam sabers called Power Knuckles and a pair of "beam wings" that appear to serve as a propulsion system.

The Destiny Gundam is a general-purpose mobile suit designed to handle any combat situation single-handedly. However, its high energy consumption requires it to be loaded with a nuclear reactor, and the ban of the N-Jammer Canceller by the Junius Treaty caused its development to be frozen. Instead, ZAFT developed the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam, which utilizes the Deuterion Beam Energy Transfer System and is also a general-purpose mobile suit, but requires the switching of mission packs called Silhouettes.

With the start of the second war, the Junius Treaty was scrapped, and ZAFT resumed Destiny Gundam's development. As ZAFT's "trump card", the Destiny Gundam is intended to be piloted by young ZAFT ace Shinn Asuka, stationed on the powerful battleship, Minerva.
